Switching Associates Degrees Online

Many college students start off their studies in one degree program only to realize that they don’t want to pursue that field after all. They then switch to a new degree program in order to be able to follow a career path that is more suited to them. This is fairly easy to do when you are gettingĀ a traditional degree at a four-year college but it may be more difficult for those people getting two-year degrees especially if they are doing their associates degrees online.

It’s not that the scenario isn’t common. In fact, it’s quite common. For example, someone who isĀ getting a criminal justice associate degree online may realize that they are more suited to the online health care associate degree because they would ultimately like to pursue a bachelor degree nursing and need a two-year degree in a related field.

The problem that comes up is that online associates degree programs are designed to be a quick and highly-focused degree. This means that the classes taken don’t necessarily transfer well to other degree programs. Criminal justice classes don’t apply to nursing, for example. So you can still switch to the new program but you have to factor in that you’re going to be starting over from scratch in some ways and that you might end up paying more than originally planned for the education that results in the associates degree you want.
