There was a time in the past when cooking school was considered just a vocational school. People pursuing culinary arts degrees were believed to be seeking the fast track to an advanced position in the restaurant industry. While this may be the case for some people who are getting this type of education, it’s not the motivation for most people to apply to cooking school.
It has become increasingly recognized that a culinary arts career is a job that is highly creative. It’s not just about cooking. It’s about making art with food. It’s about the act of creating something which is going to be enjoyed by the people that you share it with. More and more of the people who take an interest in going to a cooking school are doing so because they want to do work that will let them express themselves creatively.
This same trend has been seen with other degrees that were once considered just paths to a trade. For example, there are many technology degrees that are highly creatively rewarding. Graphic design degrees can lead to work in game design and other fields that require both technical skill and a high level of creativity. It’s not just art schools that draw in creative students anymore!
