Super Junior-Happy Time!

Stop whatever you’re doing right now.  Watch this music video, “Cooking? Cooking!” by Super Junior-Happy, and then come back.

Are you done yet?  Okay, I’ll give you another minute.

So?  How cheery do you feel right now?  Don’t you just want to go outside and plant some flowers?

The members of Super Junior-Happy (not to be confused with Super Junior or Super Junior-Trot) have not attended any culinary arts institutes nor have they posed as models for the original Ken dolls.  The group is simply a Korean boy band that has evolved into its final and most beautiful incarnation of music so happy that it’ll make you want to adopt a new puppy.

My Korean is a little rusty (i.e., non-existent), but I’m pretty sure the plot of the video goes something like this: A man is unhappy because he has to eat crummy food and his hair is weird.  Little does he know his food has been altered!  He starts tripping out and begins to believe that he’s actually a female cooking school student.  And it’s 1954.  Trust me; I’m 99% sure that’s what’s going on.

This made me laugh because as we speak, I am overseas on business and this is exactly how I feel sometimes. No idea what they’re saying, but somehow I get the jist of it, or at least I think I do. It’s my only amusement while I’m away from home. This isn’t as far-fetched as it seems, really.

Why is it that every Korean video out there is really odd like this? Or is it only the odd ones that make it to the US? They always seem goofy and surreal, and this culinary one doesn’t sound any different. I guess it’s just a culture thing. Surrealism seems big over there.

You may be right, it’s a little hard to understand the lyrics but it looks like a great commercial for Culinard Institute to me. Reminded me of Devo in the early days.

I have been working in entertainment for years and nothing beats what the Koreans put it. It’s edgy, thought provoking, and very avante garde if you ask me. Glad to see someone else gets the art in their work.

I remember even when I was pretty little, I could tell the kids’ shows made in America and which ones were done overseas. Just a totally different way of entertaining over there; their humor is so different from ours. Weird, isn’t it?

It is a great song indeed. However, the story is rather different: the girlfriend is a girl who doesn’t know how to cook, thus making their lives difficult. One day, she suddenly starts being too busy, and then she calls them, inviting them to a home-made meal. They are quite shocked to see that the food is actually good, and they become addicted (you can see it in the first and last scene of the music video). Also, I agree with you: this song and music video are very cute.
