Video Game Design

Designing video games is a common dream, it seems. When I was in high school, my first boyfriend wanted to design video games someday. He and a friend had even worked on a demo clip together! These days, he does a little graphic design on a freelance basis, but it’s not his day job.
Another friend of mine — an old co-worker from a technical writing firm I worked for, actually — also always dreamed of designing video games. She went to a traditional private college, got her bachelor’s, and then went on to pursue her master’s in graphic design while she worked as a tech writer.
Often the difference in whether someone can actually achieve this dream is whether they have the education and the persistence to actually back up their desire to work in the field. There are some good schools offering programs in graphic design out there, such as the bachelor’s degrees offered by Brown College. Some schools also offer online programs — my co-worker, for instance, was enrolled in an online master’s program in graphic design.
As with almost any other profession, a college education is becoming more and more necessary in the workplace. Don’t short-change your dreams by skipping design school!
